Introduction

On the eve of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, I have decided to dedicate a series of blogs to menstrual products. Menstrual health is a basic human right, and everyone should be able to take care of their body during menstruation. The theme for Menstrual Hygiene Day this year is “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.”

There are many period products available in India. A few commonly used ones are:

  1. Sanitary Pads
  2. Tampons
  3. Menstrual Cups
  4. Cloth
  5. Underwear/Menstrual Panty

Evidence from India’s National Family Health Survey suggests around 78% of menstruating women use sanitary pads. Let’s delve into the pros and cons, dos and don’ts of sanitary pads.

Sanitary pads, commonly referred to as pads, are often the first menstrual product women use when they start menstruating. They are comfortable and easy to use.

  1. Disposable Sanitary Pads
  2. Reusable Cloth Pads
  1. Easy to use.
  2. Easy to change.
  3. Have evolved to be more absorbent and comfortable over time.
  4. Do not require insertion into the vagina.
  5. Washable sanitary pads can be reused multiple times.
  6. Though initially costly, washable pads are cost-effective and financially sustainable in the long run.
  7. Washable or cloth sanitary pads are environmentally friendly.
  8. Reusable/cloth pads do not contain chemicals.
  1. Disposable pads are not environmentally friendly (about 90% plastic).
  2. Disposable pads are a recurring cost.
  3. Disposable pads may contain chemicals.
  4. They can shift around, especially while playing sports.
  5. They can irritate the skin on the vulva.
  1. Wash your hands before and after changing pads.
  2. Change pads at least once every 4 to 6 hours to prevent bacterial growth and odor, even on very light flow days.
  3. Wash reusable pads thoroughly and rinse multiple times to remove all detergent.
  4. Dry reusable pads in direct sunlight.
  5. Fold and wrap disposable pads in paper and dispose of them in a bin with a lid.
  1. Avoid scented pads as they can irritate the skin or cause itching.
  2. Do not flush a pad down the toilet.

1. How long can reusable pads be used?
They can be reused for approximately one year.

2. What difficulties can one encounter using reusable pads?
Compared to disposable pads, they can sometimes be inconvenient. Proper washing and drying are crucial for safe use, though often difficult due to stigma and lack of privacy. Training on good user practices, provision of soap, underwear, and storage bags, and the availability of private places for washing and drying are important.

3. Could there be any possible health impacts?
If not used properly, there might be an association with urinary tract infections and bacterial vaginosis. The use of damp materials can lead to skin irritations.

1. What is the maximum duration a disposable pad can be worn?
They should be disposed of after a maximum of 8 hours.

2. Could there be any possible health impacts?
Prolonged use leads to bacterial growth and there is a risk of infection. Disposable pads may contain some ingredients that can be harmful to the body.
