On the eve of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, I have decided to dedicate a series of blogs to menstrual products. Menstrual health is a basic human right, and everyone should be able to take care of their body during menstruation. The theme for Menstrual Hygiene Day this year is “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.”

There are many period products available in India. A few commonly used ones are:

Let’s Discuss the Pros and Cons, Do’s and Don’ts of Period Underwear
Period underwear, also known as period panties or menstrual panties, is currently trending as an effective solution to stay leak-proof and dry during menstrual cycles. These specially designed underwear typically contain a microfiber that traps blood flow, a moisture barrier to keep you feeling dry, and a layer to prevent leaks.

- Reusable/Washable
Pros of Period Underwear
- Comfortable – Provides comfort similar to regular underwear.
- Extra Protection – Offers additional protection from leaks and stains.
- Environmentally Friendly – Reusable ones are better for the environment.
- No Insertion Needed – Unlike tampons or menstrual cups, there’s no need to insert anything into the vagina.
- Easy to Use – Simple to wear like regular underwear.
- Easy to Change – Convenient to change as needed.
- Improved Over Time – Designs have become more absorbent and comfortable.
- Reusable – Washable versions can be used multiple times.
- Cost-Effective in the Long Run – Though initially pricey, reusable options are financially sustainable.
- Chemical-Free – Reusable/cloth pants do not contain chemicals.
Cons of Period Underwear
- Environmental Impact – Disposable pants are not environmentally friendly.
- Recurring Cost – Disposable options need to be bought regularly.
- Chemical Concerns – Disposable pants may contain chemicals.
- Skin Irritation – Chemicals in disposables can irritate the vulva.
- Hygiene Maintenance – Poor maintenance can lead to infections.
- Fit Issues – Improper fit can cause leaks.
- Finding the Right Fit – It may be challenging initially to find the correct fitting ones with appropriate absorbency.
- Initial Cost – You might need a set of pants to ensure they are clean and changed regularly.
Do’s and Don’ts
Do’s:
- Wash them yourself.
- Use mild, dye-free detergent.
- Ensure no soap residue remains by giving an extra rinse.
- Dry in sunlight.
- Change menstrual pants at least once every 6 to 8 hours to prevent bacterial growth.
- Wrap used disposable pants in toilet paper and dispose of them in a lidded bin.
Don’ts:
- Don’t wash them with other clothes initially; wash separately.
- Don’t use fabric softeners, especially scented ones.
- Don’t flush them.
